Eat Like a Dinosaur and a Giveaway!!

March 9, 2012  |  Life  |  Share

I have to start this off by saying thanks to the Paleo Parents for letting us review a copy of their awesome book “Eat Like a Dinosaur“. We are honored.

When we received the book in the mail we immediately read it to our 2.5yr old son Nolan. I think we read the story 3 times in a row. I had to stop there so we could make dinner. After dinner we sat down again and looked through the recipes and Nolan kept saying over and over, “Eat that one”. Lets just say the food looked appealing to Nolan. Now what happened next was priceless. Nolan found his pad and paper and asked me for a crayon. I asked why and he said he wanted to write a recipe.

The he handed me the  recipe. Not sure what it says though. Probably bacon and eggs.

After the kids went to bed that night it was my turn to dig into the book. I have to say I was really impressed with their approach to the book. Everything is laid out so it is really easy to understand and in an order that makes sense. I LOVE (yes all caps) that the recipes aren’t broke out by breakfast, lunch and dinner. This type of thinking just makes things harder. We love to put a big hunk of meat in the crock pot before bed and wake up to stew in the morning. The introduction to the family is great. You feel like everything they are writing is honest and from the heart. This dietary lifestyle change has permanently changed their lives for the better and it is awesome that they are sharing it with all of us.

I also, love their approach to switching the family over to a new diet. No holds barred. Just do it all at once. Rip the band-aid and get rid of all your crap in the kitchen and if they don’t want to eat it, well then they don’t eat. This is our approach with how we feed our kids too. Kids will not starve themselves. They just want to eat what they are used to or eat fruit all day. I mean can you blame them. They also mention getting your kids involved. This can be anything from picking out food or helping stir in the spices. Having our 2.5 yr old help in the kitchen can be messy and slightly dangerous (for him) at times. But, he loves helping us cook and that makes us so happy. It is amazing how many people don’t know the basics of cooking. I could go on a rant for days about this but I will save that for another time. Start them young.

I was joyed to see the section on projects. They run you through things you can do with your family, like the Farmer’s Market, U-Pick farms, Gardening and Yard Sales & Thrift Stores. These are great ways to get your family out together and show the kids how food is grown and what it tastes like fresh. Also, how to save a little money along the way.

Now to the important part. The recipes. I am honest in this review and want you all to know. This is not a recipe book where you are going to be overwhelmed buy the time or ingredients. All this food isn’t super fancy, ooh la la type of stuff. This is real food that people eat every night. BUT, I love their twists on some of the recipes. This is stuff I never would have thought about. Its funny because there are now a few really good Paleo/Primal recipe books out and for me I try not to look at them much. Believe me I use them and love each of them, but I like to come up with my own recipes. Why am I telling you all of this? Because, this book makes me want to use these recipes and get my kids into the kitchen and have them help even more. This is a very inspiring story. They have turned their lives around and they are showing you how simple it can be.

And yes, we did try some of the recipes. We had the 50/50 burgers with the sweet potato fries. This burger might have been the best burger I ever ate. No joke. I could have ate all six of them. My wife and oldest son had two each. Man I need to buy more bacon this weekend. Nolan already has plans for us to make the waffles and the anytime cookies.

So go out and get this book. I hear that they already have to reprint more copies and the book hasn’t even been released yet. Crazy good stuff.

Now for the giveaway.
